Apple iPhones Claim 8 of 10 Spots on the Global Top-Selling Phones List

Apple’s iPhones were the top-selling phones of 2022. The US-based phone maker’s iPhone smartphones claimed 8 spots out of the top 10 in the global ranking for the most sold phones of 2022 with Samsung taking the two remaining spots, Counterpoint’s Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker reports.

Among all, iPhone 13 was the best-selling phone of 2022. The flagship contributed 28 percent of the total iPhone sales performing strongly in markets such as China, the US, the UK, France, and Germany. Likewise, its sales further improved especially in “developing markets” after the price cuts after iPhone 14 series launch. The iPhone 13 smartphone sold two times more than the iPhone 13 Pro Max which was the second best-selling smartphone of 2022.

Similarly, iPhone 14 Pro Max took the third position on the list. It’s also the first time that a Pro Max variant came atop its siblings from the same series. It was the best-selling phone for September, October, and November of 2022. “The iPhone 14 Pro Max sales were led by early adopters and those upgrading to a higher iPhone variant,” Counterpoint’s Harshit Rastogi writes. Samsung gets only two spots in the top-selling phones list of 2022

Samsung phones had a less encouraging fate in global smartphone sales in 2022 with its only two smartphones Galaxy A13 and Galaxy A03 claiming the 4th and 10th positions. The entry-level lineups performed well in price-sensitive markets such as Latin America, the Caribbean, Mid-East, and India. The two are the only 4G LTE phones to make it on the list.

iPhone 13 Pro comes in 5th position followed by iPhone 12 which is the oldest device on the list. While the former struggled against its own Pro Max and iPhone 13 base variant’s sales, the latter’s sales were aided due to price cuts with each next-generation iPhone series launch. Its support for 5G connectivity also played an important role.

Apple’s latest models iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro took 7th and 8th positions on the top-selling phones list of 2022. The iPhone 14 series was launched back in September. Apple’s iPhone SE 2022 grabbed the 9th position and like its predecessor, it did well in Japan.

Counterpoint believes that the market share of the top-selling phones of 2022 will further increase in 2023. iPhone 14 series is only reaching global markets and the price cuts on previous models such as iPhone 13 might increase the shipment. At the same time, the report also states that brands could “continue making their portfolios leaner in 2023 to minimize cannibalization.”
