Rs 16 Billion Spent on Phone Imports Till Falgun of FY 2079/80

Nepali phone traders have spent over 16 billion for phone imports in the first eight months (till Falgun) of the current fiscal year 2079/80, as per the Customs Department’s latest data. The new data reflects the continuous stability the phone market has achieved in recent months after the phone ban.

According to the data, Nepali phone distributors spent Rs 16 billion, 60 crores, 2 lakhs, 73 thousand for the total phone import till the end of Falgun in FY 2079/80. During that time, a total of 10 lakhs, 94 thousand, and 889 units of smartphones were imported into Nepal. Likewise, the government generated Rs 3 billion, 9 crores, 85 lakhs, and 32 thousand in revenue from the imported phones.

In Falgun only, Rs 1 billion, 83 crores, 19 lakhs, and 23 thousand was spent on mobile handset imports. During the month, 10 lakh, 5 thousand, and 135 units of phones were shipped to Nepali phone markets. To compare, Till Magh, Nepali phone distributors spent Rs 14.76 billion importing over 1 million units of phones into Nepal.

Nepal fulfills its phone demands from 66 different countries with China, India, and Vietnam again being dominant importing partners. The three countries account for 96.68 percent of the total number of phone imports into Nepal. But the concern still remains wide and open due to the lack of an MDMS launch which is paving way for the grey phone market.

China represents the highest phone import transactions for Nepal. Till Falgun, a total of 7 lakhs, 64 thousand, and 842 phone units worth 10 billion, 71 crores, 78 lakhs, and 93 thousand entered from the Northern neighbors.

Similarly, Nepal imported 3 lakhs, 13 thousand, and 634 units of phones from India for Rs 4 billion, 61 crores, 44 lakhs, and 21 thousand. From Vietnam, Nepal brought in 6 thousand, and 300 phone units for Rs 71 crores, 78 lakhs, and 83 thousand.
