Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Overview
Naming
Let’s start with the naming convention from Qualcomm first. The chipset is Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, which absolutely seems as if it succeeds the previous Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (S8EG5). However, it’s more comparable to the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which is not bad either. So, it’s not the “Elite” category chipset from Qualcomm, but still pretty decent enough to power the flagship ones or at least those subordinate to them.
Performance
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 (S8G5) features eight cores with 2 being prime cores at a 3.85 GHz clock speed, while six run at up to 3.32 GHz. It’s very fast for any chipset out there, so it comes under the flagship category. Also noteworthy is that the chipset brings 36% performance improvement and 76% better web browsing responsiveness. The S8EG5 has 2 prime cores at 4.6 GHz, while the Snapdragon 8 Elite has two again at 4.32 GHz. In terms of NPU, it’s got Hexagon setup with 6 scalar and 8 vectors, which is similar to Snapdragon 8 Elite. On the other hand, the S8EG5 boasts 12 scalar and 8 vectors.

“As the demand for premium smartphones continues to surge, S8G5 is perfectly positioned to meet and exceed consumers’ evolving expectations. We’ve reimagined our 8-series family, putting premium performance into the hands of more consumers worldwide,” said Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager, mobile handset, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “S8G5 places users at the center of their mobile experiences, empowering them with the speed, intelligence, and efficiency they need to perform at their peak and unlock their full creative potential.”

Connectivity and Other Feature Support
The latest not-so-elite chipset offers less than 5G speeds but supports Bluetooth, WiFi, and satellite communications in the same capacity. Display, charging, camera, and other capabilities remain almost identical.
Which phones will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset?
Qualcomm says that Android smartphone manufacturers such as Motorola, OnePlus, vivo, etc. have already signed up to use the S8G5 chipset. Therefore, upcoming upper-tier phones, if not the flagship phones, will use this very processor. The upcoming OnePlus 15R could be one of the first phones to use this hardware.
