MediaTek Helio G91 Processor

Semiconductor manufacturer MediaTek has unveiled the MediaTek Helio G91 smartphone chipset. The hardware is an upgraded version of the Helio G88 and comes with some notable updates. It will be used by smartphone OEMs later in 2024 for mid-range devices.

Helio G91 uses TSMC’s 12nm process. It is a 4G chipset. That means it is aimed at affordable smartphones.

Mediatek Helio G91 chipset features

The MediaTek Helio G91 chipset comes with support for up to 108 MP cameras. This is the most notable difference from the Helio G88 SoC from 2021 which only provided up to 64 MP optics. Additionally, the camera will allow for AI enhancement functionalities. The company says that the chip comes with in-sensor zoom with 2.0um pixel binning which would deliver clearer night photos with lossless portraits.

In terms of power, the silicon comes in an octa-core processor consisting of two 2.0 GHz Cortex A75 performance cores. The others are 6 1.8 GHz Cortex A55 power-efficient cores. Likewise, the ARM Mali-G52 MC2 GPU comes paired for the graphics.

MediaTek Helio G91 is a budget chipset which offers 4G cellular connectivity, WiFi 5, 108 MP camera, 90 Hz refresh rate, and FHD+ resolution

Unlike other chipsets, this one won’t offer supreme smartphone gaming performance. However, it comes with MediaTek HyperEngine Gaming so the gameplay can be smooth in low settings.

In terms of the display, the chipset offers support up to the maximum resolution of 2520 x 1080 pixels of resolution and a 90 Hz refresh rate. It provides up to 8 GB LPDDR4x and eMMC 5.1 storage system. For connectivity, it has the support for WiFi 5 (IEEE 802.11ac) and Bluetooth 5.0. And if you are into HD voice, the chipset also enables dual VoLTE (Voice over LTE) service. Check out: How to activate VoLTE in Ntc?

MediaTek Helio G91 availability and devices

Given the specs, the MediaTek Helio G91 chipset will be used in budget smartphones starting somewhere in 2024. As most mid and upper-mid-range devices support 5G connectivity, 4G SoC phones are only expected for affordable devices. MediaTek didn’t specify which smartphones will come with this chipset. But we can expect these devices to arrive soon.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
