WorldLink Upgrading FTTH to 10 Gbps XGS-PON Technology

Worldlink 10Gbps XGS PON upgrade

After the upgrade to 10 Gbps capable XGS-PON fiber technology, WorldLink customers will be able to receive the same download and upload speed in internet packages.

WorldLink Communications Ltd., Nepal’s largest Internet service provider, has successfully completed the necessary tests to upgrade its Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON). The company has announced plans to upgrade its existing FTTH network to the XGS-PON network from next week.

Now, WorldLink is the first company in Nepal to upgrade its fiber network to XGS-PON technology. With the upgrade, WorldLink says its customers will get the same download upload speed.

In Nepal, internet consumers get higher download speeds in comparison to upload speeds. There is a wide discrepancy when it comes to the difference between those two types of speeds. However, WorldLink will be the first company to formally even that out by integrating the new technology. Do read: Fiber Internet Users Reaching 1.9 Million, WorldLink Tops

In the existing GPON network technology, the symmetric data speed was not possible. It is because the technology came with the asymmetric bandwidth capacity of 2.5 Gbps downlink speed, and 1.25 Gbps uplink speed.

XGS-PON fiber technology

But with the XGS-PON technology, WorldLink will carry 10 Gbps download and the same 10 Gbps of upload speed capacity. Due to the same speed download and upload speed support, consumers will also get the duplex internet service when the upgrade completes.

PON is an internet network is an access location from which the internet’s main fiber infrastructure (passive infrastructure) connects different customers. Then it connects to the home fiber router aka ONT.

WorldLink says the 10 Gbps capable XGS-PON upgrade will allow similar download and upload speeds

Compared to GPON, the 10 Gbps XGS-PON has eight times more uplink bandwidth ability and four times more downlink capacity. Similarly, the new PON network will also get better latency performance than its predecessor.

“Theoretically, each GPON port will be able to provide internet connections to 256 customers following the upgrade. It is twice as many as the current ability of connection for up to 128 customers,” the company said. Additionally, the company will also be capable to provide internet services to customers living far from the access location with the XGS-PON.

Doubling down on its technology, WorldLink is also in talks with Nokia to upgrade its XGS-PON to 25G PON technology from software. The company wants to “beta test” the technology in Nepal soon.

The upgrade will allow for higher internet speed (over 1 Gbps)

Why is the XGS-PON upgrade essential? It is essential because it enables the company to provide internet packages of over 1 Gbps in the future. The ISP says it will benefit content creators, YouTubers, gamers, and streamers, and will also be useful for video conferencing.

Besides, the company, which has provided service to corporate subscribers from the GPON network will provide port, internet, and MPLS data service to both the corporate and wholesale customers after the upgrade.
