The government of Nepal has finally launched the Nagarik Mobile app to deliver their services online. Although the mobile app has been heard for a long time, the Nagarik App is now ready to be used for e-governance. The Nagarik App is expected to integrate all of the government services using the e-governance platform.
Asgar Ali, the IT advisor to Prime Minister, had conceived this idea to integrate all government services in a single app, two years ago. He had talked about the Nagarik app on several occasions. One of the events where he had revealed about the app is at the AI expo held in Kathmandu on August 25, 2019.
The app plans to provide all the government services digitally so that people need not visit the Government offices to get those services. Suppose, you want to apply for a vehicle license, then you do not need to visit the license office. You can apply for it from your home. All you need to enter is your identification for which they are going to use the mobile number.
Currently, the Nepal government has several systems and solutions for each of the services. Without any integration, each system does not recognize another system. Whereas they also have several mobile apps like the Passport app, the Supreme court of Nepal, Nepal Rajpatra app for those services. And you have to visit each of the offices to get those services.
Now, they are going to integrate all of those services from one window either using Nagarikta ID or Mobile number. If we enter our Nagarikta number or mobile number, they will gather all the information needed, which makes it very easy for the registration or service request. So, you do not need to enter your information, documents again and again separately. The best part of the app is you can take those services online, from anywhere.
Those services which do not need people to reach the Government offices will come under the scope of the app. But for the first phase, only a few services are provided from the application. As known, they shall integrate other services gradually.
Nagarik App Download
The Nagarik app is already available to download in the play store. As told, the app is a Beta version, so it looks like an early version of the mobile app. They might revamp the app to a new fresh design, looks and make it free from any glitches. For now, we have found many people to complain about their difficulty with registration from their mobile number. It is mainly about getting the OTP (one-time password) for the account and mobile number verification.
The mobile app will provide government information and delivers some limited government services for now. This app has been launched with the vision of implementing e-governance in Nepal. So, this app can be seen as the digital face of the Government of Nepal.
Moreover, the app will link people to the respective department or service delivery agency. As many departments and government entities have gone online, it should be easy to integrate them into one. Similarly, they also need to synchronize the service delivery process for all of them.
We believe this app is one step ahead for Good service and good governance. Hope the Nagarik app will ease government service delivery and make people’s lives better. Also, we can expect it to bring transparency, efficiency, and accountability. We believe that the use of digital technology can only realize our dream of prosperity.
