Nepal Telecom (NTC) implements a strict set of criteria for users to buy or replace an NTC SIM card for user privacy. Taking customers’ security into consideration, the telco has also requested them to use SIM cards registered in their own names only. Particularly, it stressed the importance of SIM card authentication in regard to the use of phone numbers for various government services, mobile banking, and social media accounts.

These days, multiple services require people to submit their mobile phone numbers for identification and account creation. For government services such as National ID cards, Nagarik App, banking, social media sites, etc. people use their SIM card numbers to verify themselves. It has become almost imperative too. But, Ntc says that safe services such as mobile banking and others are only safe when people use SIM cards registered under their own name.

The operator further alerts that using another’s phone numbers for mobile banking could possibly lead one to lose the amount. Besides, misuse of social media and potential trouble with the law are other possible undesirable scenarios. This is why Ntc has urged its customers to use SIM cards registered under their own name or get a replacement if it is missing or damaged.

How to buy or replace an NTC SIM card

Likewise, the telco has implemented criteria for its customers when buying a new SIM card or replacing an existing one. As per the telco, customers need to meet the following condition to buy or replace an NTC SIM card:

  • All the details such as the customer’s name, address, issue district of Identity document & date, ID card number, and contact must be clear as well.
  • Similarly, only the customers who visit Ntc customer service centers will get a SIM card.
  • Ntc only accepts a copy of your ID card if your name, father’s name, ID card number, date of issue, and district of the issue are the same on the original document.
  • If you visit the customer service center by yourself to replace a SIM card (after losing, damaging, or for any reason), you need to fill up a form. After verifying the details from the copy and the original document, the company will issue a new SIM card. Find out the differences between prepaid vs postpaid SIM cards in Nepal.

If someone comes to get an Ntc SIM card for another customer

  • In case the customer is not present and comes to collect the SIM card registered in the name of another person, the customer must show the full identity card of the person coming to collect the SIM card with the customer’s approval and the reason for the customer’s inability to be present. Likewise, Ntc may only change the SIM card after the document submission is complete.

  • If the customer’s details are different from the customer’s registered SIM, the user and the registered customer’s mobile number can be updated and the person giving and taking the copy of their citizenship or other official identification card and their copy can be present and submit the application. For those with a disability

  • If one has a disability, then you can visit the telco with a letter, an original/copy of an ID card. And if a customer is dead, the rightful relative may visit with the original document, and identity card along with the death certificate and proof of relationship. Ntc can then verify and issue a SIM card.
  • A customer’s details can be different from the customer’s registered SIM. In such a case, the user and the registered customer’s mobile number can be updated and the person giving and taking the copy of their citizenship or other official identification card and their copy can be present and submit the application.
  • At the same time, if the customer’s details are different from the actual user’s, they can change the SIM card after filling up an application form. They must also bring an acknowledgment letter and identity card of the customer taking the SIM card.
