Nepal Government has launched it’s first governmental e-learning portal that appears as an open library for the Nepalese students. The name of the online learning portal is Sikai Chautari, which translates to a learning hub.
The lockdown at that crucial time of the year when the educational institution and students would have been busy their exams, has caused a negative impact on the whole education system of Nepal. College exams, as well as new school sessions, are on a halt.
Nepal government hasn’t yet decided when the school re-opens and when the universities will be taking college exams but the government of Nepal quickly took a step on providing education to the school going students by opting for the digital platform.
Sikayi Chautari learning portal contains a curriculum from Grade 1 to Grade 10. It is accessible by anyone located at any corner of Nepal. The portal is available in both English and Nepali languages.
The portal looks simple and student-friendly. The home page gives you an option to choose the grade from Grade 1 to Grade 10. As you choose one of the grades, the portal then manifests various options of subjects and their chapters. Further, you choose the subject and chapters and begin to study.
On the home page, there is also an option for Extracurricular Activities (ECR) for kids. This section is divided into three levels. All three of these levels contain pictures and either story or description of the picture.
Level 1 includes several pictures and descriptions with some questions asked at the end. Level 2 includes informative short essays with some word meanings and questions provided at the end of the essay. While Level 3 includes exciting long stories.
Children can also listen to Nepali language stories in an audio form. The audiobooks are simple in language and fun to listen to. The stories can be downloaded so it enables children to read or listen to them whenever they want. The ECR section is available only in the Nepali Language.
How to use the e-learning portal?
To use the government’s learning portal, you need to follow the steps as:
Go to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology’s e-learning portal called Sikai Chautari.
The portal might come in the Nepali language by default but you can select the English language as well from the top right corner.
They need to select the Grade, Subjects, and learn through the platform.
Computer friendly parents and students both can use the portal for online learning.
Sikai Chautari eLearning portal is quite interesting and simple to use. The portal can really be useful for children not only during the lockdown period but afterward too. This e-learning portal can continue to the habit of learning in the students. The download option makes it flexible so if they make other content also available for download, the children can access the content even when there is no internet connection.
The e-learning portal, being available in both English and Nepali language is impressive. It helps the students to increase their knowledge and vocabulary in those languages. The stories in both reading and listening form in this e-learning portal are engaging and knowledge enhancing. It reduces the chances of children getting bored. We can expect them to include other education level content in near future.
The effort the Nepal Government has put on making this portal effective is praiseworthy. And the dream of making everything Digital or the Digital Nepal concept could be realized soon.
This e-learning portal can be an effective way for children to spend qualitative time, especially during the lockdown. The portal will be better if it is interactive. The portal has limited features, which they can improve slowly.
